1996 Ford Explorer hard to shift into gear

1996 ford explorer we have trouble shifting gears almost have to use two hands to shift, but if you turn the explorer off. You can shift gears just fine.

It sounds like the trans is good. Chances are either the pressure plate is bad (were you getting any chattering when pulling out from a stop?) Or the slave cylender is bad (is the fluid level full in the resivour?)
