Hello,

I have a 2000 Ford Expedition that I recently purchased and it seems to go dead when the tank is a quarter of a quarter tank. When the dash is telling me I have 40+ miles to go before empty. When I stop at a stop sign or a stop light and press on the gas, it doesnt go at first which causes me to press harder and then it like jerks out. It runs fine but it jerks every time I stop and press the gas to accelerate. I've let the gas light come on and the car said I had 20 mile to go but it literally gave out on me in the middle of the street it got up to about 30 miles and then when I pushed on the gas nothing, it was just pressing to the ground with no acceleration. When turned off it would start back up again but then go in and out of giving gas and not givivng gas. The mechanic told me to put some gas and I did and it has been running fine. But my issue is even with a quarter of a quarter tank it should still be working fine without stuttering. Basically I wanna know if this is normal should it be stuttering when the dash is telling me I can go 40 miles and it's still aways away from the red/empty sign. Is this caused by a bigger issue than just not having enough gas. Also i'm only getting about 10 miles a gallon is there a way to increase that?

It could be a couple of things, water in the tank, bad fuel guage sending unit. Loose wire causing you to not get a good fuel reading. I would start with putting dry gas in the car. This will help get rid of some of the water, and put in fuel system cleaner. Has the fuel filter been changed, if not then it would not hurt to change it. If those don't work then the problem would be in the fuel tank itself. You may have a false fuel reading

Thanks what exactly is dry gas and i'll have the fuel filter looked at. I have a question though I have the eddie bauer edition and it has a lot of little add ons. When I start the car and i've left the wheels slightly turned or when I first turn on the car I hear a noise assuming its coming from the wheels but i'm not sure it sounds like something is adjusting. Could it be the wheels is this normal. If its not the wheels is it the running/step board im not sure. I hope it's not a problem it just sounds like something adjusting itself. I hope I didnt cause a problem by just letting it continue to make the noise thinking it was normal.

Dry gas disperses any water that is found in the fuel tank. It helps it evaporate so it leaves just tyhe fuel. In cold weather or any other time if water vapor is in gas tank and picked up by the fuel pump will make a vehicle to run rough and sometimes keep it from running at all. A few years ago I worked for a company and when the fuel gage read less than a quarter of a tank, it would stop running. It had about 1/3 of water in the tank. Most times this is rare but it does happen. With reference with the vehicle making a noise while turning it could be a that something is not lubed or just a add on that is scraping. For safety, check the front end to make sure some part is going bad
