Ford escort 1988 ignition problem

I am a visitor to florida where I have a 1988 escort station Wagon, fuel injection 66,000 miles. Just before leaving the engine died on me as I was cruising at 50 along the highway. No juddering, coughing etc it just died and although I was in gear (automatic) the tacho dropped to zero as I drifted to a halt. The only other diagnostic I have tried is that when I turn the car over there is no spark from the coil. I do not have a manual at present so not sure which wires are which. Whats the most likely problem : fuses, ignition control box (where is it?!) etc any advice. Thanx keith

If you have no spark at the coil, it is either a bad coil, ignition module, or pick up coil.

Thank you for that advice, I'm a "contact breaker" era, how do you test the pick up coil?,
