You probably have a defective brake light switch

I agree, it is very possible that the break light switch is bad. I have a Ranger, and I have had to replace the switch 4 times in about 10 years. good news is, it is pretty easy to replace, and in expensive, the switch is usually located on the break pedal linkage underneath the dash board, your local auto parts store should carry it in stock, I think I paid about $4 for mine, if you go to the dealer it will cost about $15.
