2000 Ford Escort shifting the gear

I can not shift my gear from park to drive. It become lock in place when I go back to park. And the only way I can down shift is to turn the ignition to the off position and slid the gear to neutral and crank the car. Brake lights want work. I dont know, but I believe that these two problems are related. Thank you

Check fuses and check brake light switch on top of the brake switch
