1999 Ford Escort clicking noise from engine

When the car is turned on a clicking noise comes from the engine. When the car is revved up the clicking noise becomes more rapid. Oil has been added. Any ideas?

Had this issue last month possibly. Does your car turn over?

Apparently I had left the lights on and drained the battery. My Dad tried to explain why this caused the clicking but can't remember

regardless we hooked a battery charger up, the car turned over and that was that, no more clicking

I got a replacement battery though just in case
