2004 Ford Escape 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

I have a 2004 2.0l ford escape (manual) which idles normally but when I shift from 1st gear to 2nd the rpms shoot up to 3000. Then after a few seconds it drops back to normal. From 2nd to 3rd gear I dont notice any rpm surge only from 1st to 2nd. Any ideas on what it might be?

Sounds like the clutch is slipping-if not could be one of the following below

Dirty fuel injectors (cleaning the injectors often fixes this).
Bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
Bad TPS (throttle position) sensor
Bad or dirty MAF (mass airflow) sensor
Low fuel pressure (leaky fuel pressure regulator or weak fuel pump)
Vacuum leaks (intake manifold, vacuum hoses, throttle body, EGR valve)
Bad gasoline (fuel contaminated with water or too much alcohol)

Sometimes, what feels like a hesitation is actually ignition misfire rather than lean misfire. The causes of ignition misfire may include:

Dirty or worn spark plugs
Bad plug wires
Weak ignition coil
Wet plug wires
