2000 Ford Contour battery cable

The positive battery cable going from the battery to the motor is got just bare wirethe outside coating has melted away the car is sputtering then cuts off but it cranks right back up. I think this is what is causing the problem but I am not sure I dont know how to change the battery cable can you help me?

Follow cable one goes to the power fuse box other goes to a big fuse behind the intake (i think fuse some does ) take ground off bat, jack up car, secure with jack stands, and a bright light to be able to get to the wire on the starter, if wire doesnt go to fuse and just goes to the bat just disconnect it for starter put on new one then run it around saftley to the bat.
