1995 Ford Contour turns over slow but is not the startet ba

A 95 countour with a 97 motor in it was runing fine than just stalled. It aked like the battery was bad or the alt but was not I put a new starter on it and did the timein belt and it still turns over like the battery is going dead. Then the starter starts to smoke.

Check there is not too much oil in the engine or the oil is not too thick and replace oil if necessary the starter is struggling to turn the engine over? Also check all wiring going to the starter for wear/damage and not loose
