1979 Ford Bronco Engine will not go over 2500 RPMs

It has a 351m, it has ran perfect then all of a sudden it would not go over 2500 rpms, if I try to push it any harder it backfires, it starts fine idles fine and anything under 2500 rpms you would not know any thing was wrong with it got any thing to try.

Try a new distributor vacuum advance.

Is ther a way to tell if the vacuum advance is bad

Use a vacuum pump apply vac, if it leaks or does not pump up, its no good, also remove the distributor cap, and see if the plate moves, it could be frozen in place.
