Exhaust may be leaking at the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter which is joined together as one complete unit welded together?

Getting raw bad exhaust smell in car when stopped at lights etc, but fine when travelling. A whistling sound when 1st started at cold start up and the sound gets less noticeable when warmed up. Slight hissing sound of air escaping when accelerating. Under the hood I can hear louder exhaust sound with noticeable smell near the manifold area. There is no check engine light on and there is no noticeable lack of power. Looking to find a manual of what the process is to take of the manifold/catalytic converter and replace the gasket. Could I use an oil diffuser for smoke to put in exhaust as a smoke machine to find leak or use a shop vac air blower part to exhaust on muffler to pressure the exhaust? And spray foamy soap to check for bubbles?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and removal process of exhaust manifold, thanks

Hello,

Using shop air and soapy water on a cold exhaust system is the preferred method of finding exhaust leaks. A smoke generator struggles to fill the large volume of the exhaust system.

How to remove the catalytic converter is illustrated in attachments below.

Assemble in reverse order.

Cheers, Boris

HI, thank you for the detailed pictures of this catalytic converter removal. I applied a shop vac blower to the muffler tailpipe and wrapped duct tape around to seal it then pressured the system with air and heard hissing coming from front area by manifold and turbo. When the heat shields and covers were taken off, I instantly seen the metal clasp that goes around the turbo to the exhaust was dangling and somehow the bolt was missing so from vibrations and hot and cold contractions it fell out. I ended up finding a bolt and nut laying around that I used and put the collar back on and tightened and all is good now. I will add some pictures and a video of the car starting off with the whistle sound and how loud it was. Thank you for those illustrations, very handy and helpful to assist in process.
