I have a question regarding my vehicle listed above LT it has a 2.2 ecotec with automatic transmission. I am having to replace my engine and was wondering if I can use an engine from a 2007 of the same exact car and model, a 2007 Chevy Cobalt 2.2 ecotec automatic, it's just a year older than mine. Would the 2007 work in my 2006 without having to make modifications?

Hello,

That engine should work. Check the engine VIN code if it is F for both of these cars.
The only difference might be the engine software mapping. As the 2007 has a slightly different output.

What you can do is to call your local Chevy dealer and give them the VIN for both of these vehicles. They will be able to look up the exact engine that is in each of them and can tell you if they are the same.

Here is a basic engine replacement guide:

I have attached diagrams below for your reference.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.

Hi,

As far as the engine itself, the two different model years indicate the exact same part number, so it should switch without difficulty. However, there could be differences in sensors and other electronics, so I recommend switching them from one to the other.

If you look at pics 1 and 2, I highlighted the part numbers for both model years.

I don't know if you need them, but I included the directions for an engine replacement specific to this car.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
