Dear Car Pros,

I am trying to remove the Engine Control Module (ECM) in this vehicle to send it for analysis and repair in Jacksonville, Fla. My problem is that I cannot locate the ECM either under the dashboard or under the hood. Diagrams appear to show the ECM can be accessed under the engine hood, but I cannot see it anywhere on or near the firewall. I have also removed the center console and radio unit to look all around it, but cannot see the ECM. Please, can you help me with your wisdom?
Many thanks and best regards, David Kinley II

Good afternoon,

I attached a picture of the location and the procedure.

Roy

This component is non-serviceable and must be replaced as a unit, do not try to disassemble components.

REMOVAL
1. Negative battery cable
2. Lower left trim panel
3. Disconnect ECM harness connector.
4. Remove ECM bracket retaining bolts, then ECM.

Note: To prevent possible Electronic Discharge damage to the ECM. Do not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board.

Dear Roy, Thank you so very much for your prompt and through reply.

The removal instructions and image were both very helpful in locating the ECM. My only remaining question is: How many and which type of bolts are securing the ECM to the bracket? I was able to see and remove the one bolt on the rear-facing surface/side of the ECM. But I can't see or remove the bolt(s) on the front-facing side of the ECM because I cannot see or determine what tool to use in removing them. Please clarify: Are the other bolts -- on the opposite side -- the same size/head shape as the one I removed on the visible side? If so, I can use a socket or adjustable wrench to crank them lose and finish removing the ECM unit. Thank you for clarifying this last question. It may seem silly or obvious, but I cannot see the bolts I am trying to remove.

Thank you again for your very helpful and detailed advice. I await your reply with great anticipation. (Cannot wait to get this ECM repaired!)

With best regards,
David Kinley III

They do not show number of bolts or sizes. You will need to visually inspect for that information.

Too old for our information system to be that specific.

Many thanks for your follow up to my question, Roy. I could not inspect the other bolts on the ECM front side, but the very resourceful maintenance guy in my apartment building took a photo of the blind side with his phone, and that revealed that there were remaining two nuts. We determined that they were the same 8mm nut that had been removed, and he had a suitable open end-wrench to pull both nuts. The ECM was finally removed; and it is now on its way to Module Experts repair service by USPS/next day. Should get there Friday, 23 November. I am hopeful that your team can find what is wrong with that darn computer. It has been plaguing me for over a year. I bought a new car!
Thanks again for your great advice and detective work. If there is anything I can do to return the favor, please let me know.

With best regards, David Kinley III ;
