Hello, I have a 1998 stratus and when I got the car the tach worked as it should. But within this last year, the tach would not be responsive at all, and then one day the tach went all the way around and now it is backwards, 90% of the time it is working but the other 10% it is dead. It is still backwards though. How do I begin to fix it?

Press the odometer reset button and turn the key to ON position. This will set the gauge cluster to diagnostic mode. All your gauges will start at 0, 1/4, 1/2, and full. See if there is any code in the memory. You may have a bad gauge cluster.

How would I check to see if there is a code in the memory? And how would "diagnostic mode" be romoved?

Look at your odometer LCD screen. If there is any codes, they will be displayed.

Removing the key from the ignition will exit the diagnostic mode.

Ok, thank you. If there is a code, that means I may have a bad cluster, and if there isn't a code, what does that mean?

Getting a code doe not necessarily mean bad cluster. You need to post the code that you get so we can start the diagnostic process. But more than likely you have bad cluster.

Its the Cluster itself. Its acually a couple of resistors on the circuit board. You can spin the tach back around by taking it apart. And then you can check the board also, there are a couple of blue resistors. And if they are a lil brown or black around them, that means that the contact is weak.

I hope this helps.
