Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
2001 Dodge Ram V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

The truck was making a lot of noise from the rear end before i parked it. Now it won't move backward in two wheel drive but will in four. When i went to move it the first time i was going to back up and heard noises coming from the rear end. I looked under the truck while in reverse and noticed the drive shaft would move but truck wouldn't. I also noticed there was gear lube leaking from the pinion seal. What could the problem be specifically.

If the driveshaft was spinning and the truck didn't move, the gears are out of the differential. You need to remove the rear differential cover to determine exactly what has happened.

If the gears are out is it still possible that the truck will move forwards but not backwards?

Ring gear has chipped teeth, pinion bearing or parts of it were scooped out by hand along with clutch disc pieces. Found what looked like small copper threads. Could not see all of the pinion teeth. Without rotating assembly all other gears looked okay. ????
