Dodge Neon gas tank

My dad accidentally drilled a hole in the gas tank of my 1996 dodge neon while trying to fix a wiring problem. The hole is small and located on the top of tank. He says he repaired the hole with glue he uses for installing gas line pipes. I was wondering if this even worked because lately I've been getting choked out by gas fumes while driving. He said he'd take another look at the tank later this week to see if he has to reapply the glue. Is he going about this the wrong way? If so, any suggestions?
Any help would be much appreciated.

If the glue didn't work it would throw a check engine light.
The neon have a lousy set up on the fuel lines that run to the front of the car. They are enclosed in a housing that retains moisture and rot them out. You may have lines going bad.
