My car ran out of oil while my son's friend was driving it, it was running fine while on the highway, when he exited, the car died, there was no oil, it was extremely hot and would not start, it just turned over real slow, we let it cool down and tried to jumpstart it, it tried to start and we heard some grinding metal sounds. Could the timing chain broke when the engine ran out of oil and if so did damage the valves, water pump, etc?

if the timing chain broke then the engine would rotate very fast, not slowly. sounds like the internals are shot. it only takes a few seconds for the parts to start melting together with no oil so it's amazing it lasted that long on the interstate . always, always check oil level..
