1996 Dodge Intrepid lunges

When I put it in drive and press the accelerater the car lunges and sometimes as soon as I put it in drive it shuts off. Runs in reverse and neutral.

Bad news here. Sound to me like the trans is going away.

The last one that I took apart with this problem had planetary problems inside the trans. It's repairable, just expensive and not something that I'd tackle at home.

A car the age of this one is pushing it as far as repair or scrap on this repair.
