i was wondering if the fuel filter would have anything to do with this, as far as i know it hasnt been changed since we bought the truck.

Could be the fuel filter but check the fuel pressure too and comeback with the readings-also the idle air controller and the throttle position sensor-

There is no in-liine fuel filter on this vehicle. The only filter is in the tank. You still need to check the fuel pressure.
