There is a noise in the steering like a knocking sound that occurs driving normal and when you go over a bump or are turning right or left, slow or fast. Why?

Steering shaft. It is a two-piece assembly that slides together in the event of a crash. The fix is to replace it but I heard of one fellow who used brass shim stock to stick between the two parts and it has held up very well.

A new assembly will have play in it when you twist the two halves in opposite directions. That is normal and the play goes away when you extend the shaft to install it. If you find the part number of the shaft you need, I have a half dozen new ones still in the packages. I DO know mine are the wrong part number for a 2000 model.
