the mechanics of the switch feel completely worn out. when i turned the key there was litttle or no resistance and no fire, the starter doesn't make a sound. Is there a way to start it besides a rolling start?

you could rig up a starter button, simlar to how race cars are. just run a ground from a push switch to battery ground than a hot from push switch to starter. when you want to start it, insert key and turn to ON but not trying to crank, then push in starter push switch until engine fires than release push switch and voila. or just replace ignition switch..
