Based on your info I would say you may need a fuel filter. The codes should be read as 2 digit codes. In other words 1 flash a pause then 2 flashes would be a code 12. After looking at your post I decided that you probably actually had a code 88 and then a 55. This is normal the 88 is flashed first it basically tells you that the test has started. Then 55 will flash if there are no codes which is telling you the test has ended. A fuel filter will not set a code. If however you have had the check engine light come on try to read it again and remember to start with 8 flashes a pause, 8 flashes. End with 55 let me know if there is anything in between.
Good Luck

When I first bought my Dakota it would have a mystery dying problem No one could figure out. It would just die, not start, then start some other time.
Code would skip the start test code 88 and go straight to 12 then 55 After replacing whole ignition system ended up replacing computer to fix. Now Im having a cut out and sputter problem at cruizing/ low speed but will run a flawless hard charging 1/4 mile. Code does same thing. Starting to wonder if skipping the start test and code 12 means bad computer.I have already replaced almost and I mean Almost everything. Any help for me rely to 92 sputters randomly
