Blue Smoke = Oil
Black Smoke = Fuel
White Smoke = Water

However, When you first start your car, if you have a lot of water in your muffler, it will condensate or blow white smoke but will stop if it's not the head gasket.

To check if the problem is the head gasket, after running the car for at least 1/2 an hour, shut it off and wait 5 minutes. Start it up again and watch for white smoke. You can also look at the oil fill cap and see if there's a thick white oily film on it.

Cost to replace it will depend on who you take it to and whether there are other complications along with the initial blown gasket -- could be as little as $800 or as high as $2000

Good luck!
