When do I check ATF fluid, when the car is running? Or shut off? At point point on the dipstick should the fluid be, at the HOT point or the Warm point?

Checking criteria is printed on the end of the dipstick. Normally, the engine should be up to normal temperature and running, run the shifter through all the gears ending up in neutral or park, then wipe off the dipstick and stick it in to check the level. "Hot" would be the expected level if you just came off the highway or were pulling a trailer.

If you aren't having a problem and you don't see evidence of a leak, chances are the level is fine. The smell and color of the fluid is more important. If it's black or smells burned, it's time for a professional opinion.
