When I turn the wheels without moving forward or back there is a loud crunching from the front axle and when I start moving there is a knocking at the front as well. What could this be?

Does it sound like dried out rubber bushings when you turn the wheel? Also, the clunking, does it change with vehicle speed, turning, bumps?

Not sure about 'dried out rubber' but it definetly sounds as if something needs oiled. The guy I bought the car off showed me receipts of the work that he had done on the front of the car! And yes, when I get to about 40mph the knocking somewhat stops. When I turn the wheels it sounds to me like its metal crunching (only when I dry steer). And I do know that the alinement is off slightly. Could that be the knocking?

I would start by checking the sway bar bushings. As far as the alignment, it wouldn't cause it.
