If you go to the "Belt Routing Diagrams" site on this page, place the vehicle info in and you will get a picture of the routing order.

Let me know if you have questions.

For the p/s: Loosen tensioner 3 bolts, move the pump down to loosen the belt.

For A/C and alt: Loosen idler pulley and the tensioner bolt (behind it).

I lost power steering suddenly and car won't keep a charge now.
( battery is strong). Car was squeeking before this happened. Think it's the alt/ps belt or could be the a/c belt not sure, please advise. Need instructions on how to install a new one of these belts on a 1997 dodge avenger (6 cyl). I am a woman! Not afraid to fix my car! A little instruction would't hurt!
Thank You

Unfortunatly my software doesnt have any pics of the tensioner for your car, but there is a wheel with alocking nut in th ecenter, loosen the lock nut and locate the tensioning bolt, this when turned willl move the wheel up and down. Install new belt and tension it fairly tight, but a belt tension gauge is the best way to tell when it is tight enough.Instead of buying a tension gauge, install the belt and tension it until it doesnt make any noise with a/c on or when turning the wheel or starting the car. Here is a pic of the belt routing for you engine

My somn bought a car and the AC Compressor is going bad. He can not afford a new compressor. Dopes anyone know how to figure out what size serpentine belt to buy to by-pass AC unit. Or is this just impossible with this car?
Thanks!

Hello -

Just because the compressor is going bad doesn't mean you have to take the belt off of it. It free wheels until the clutch engages. There are thousands of vehicles driving around with no AC working and the belt still on.

The only problem you will ever run into is if the compressor locks up and the pulley no longer turns. Otherwise... No big deal to run it that way.

AC Compressor runs about $379 at Auto Zone...

I attached the diagram of the belt routing for your review. Also, due to you have a separate drive belt and generator belt, if you don't want to run a compressor belt then just remove it in the even the compressor locks up. Normally you would need to get a bypass pulley which basically just allows you to put the original belt back on.

Hope this helps.
