Engine Mechanical problem
2001 Daewoo Nubira 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I've been working on my friend's Nubira, which has an engine trouble code of 0440, which indicates a large leak in the vacuum I guess, and so can't pass emissions. I tried replacing the gas cap because I've been told that is often the culprit. The cap was only $8 at autozone so I don't know if it's just cheap or if it's something else. I've been told it's possibly the Purge Valve. Is this the same as the Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid? How would I know if it's that or something else? Also, how do I check for leaks in the fuel lines themselves?

Ok this code is for emissions and usually the fuel cap. Now you must also keep in mind that if the gas cap is on (at least 3 clicks) the light will not just go out. You need to use the scanner to reset light. So if you would go to your local parts store (one that does a free scan) and pull codes write them down and reset the light. Now drive it and see if comes back on. If so then we can look into the evap canister and purge valve.

Yes, as I mentioned I tried the gas cap and clicked it three times. I reset the codes but they came back on after less than 100 miles of driving.

Just to make sure you did check to see if you got the proper gas cap? Do you have a digital multi meter or a scanner? If so then I will look up the test to check the canister purge valve.

Yes, I checked the cap. It's the correct one. I do have a multi-meter available to me. Can I assume from these responses that it is almost always the gas cap? Is the purge canister so unusual?

Yes this is usually the gas cap that causes this code. But it is an emission code and the next likely part could be the purge solenoid. So when you get the meter let me know and I will run you through a couple of test if you feel comfortable enough doing them.
