Noticed a loss of power took my 1974 vw super beetle into a mechanic and they did a valve job and noticed that the crankshaft had an excessive amount of play. He then told me the best bet would be to leave the motor. That is very expensive. Is that true is that the only thing I can do? The motor and car are from germany stamped inside of the vehicle. The motor is a 1200 and does not leak oil at all.

Excessive crankshaft end float is a common problem with older VW engines, you will basically have to do a full re build to fix it, the engine must be dismantled to access the components, if left the engine will start to leak oil from the rear oil slinger there is no seal on these engines it relies on a slinger divert oil from leaking past the end bearing shell.
