Two symptoms (may or may not be related), in no particular order.

Symptom 1: Noticed the car jerk back and forth as I was engaging fifth or sixth gear (can't remember which one). I thought I had let go of the clutch too quickly, but have never noticed this symptom before (or in 150,000 miles). I pressed down on the clutch and car stopped jerking, then depressed it as I would normally and jerking did not reoccur. Only occurred a couple of times in the last few days (never occurred before in these gears). The jerking is, of course, much more common at lower gears when I let go of the clutch too quickly.

Symptom 2: Brief/transient soft grinding noise in first and second gear driving after warm/hot start. Cold start and as engine warms up there is no noise. After engine warms to operating temperature (my commute is about 1-2 hours), then I stop/park (usually to pick something up at the store) and turn engine off. After 10-15 minutes I return to the car and turn it on and engage first and second gear to drive away, there is a transient soft grinding noise that lasts a few seconds (while progressively pressing on throttle) and goes away after depressing throttle to change to higher gear. This does not happen at higher gears and only happens while driving out of the parking lot. The noise does not occur after stopping at a light and engaging first and second gears to drive away after light turns green (no problem at stop signs either). Does not occur again unless I turn car off and then start it up again shortly after.

While symptom 1 and 2 may not be related, I want to say that I noticed symptom 2 occur shortly after I noticed symptom 1 (probably same day).

Welcome to 2CarPros.

Has the transmission fluid level been checked? Also, has it ever been serviced? If that has never been done, that is where I would start. Here are the directions for servicing this transmission. The fluid type and capacity will be at the end. Also, the two attached pictures correlate with these directions.

Transmission Fluid Level Inspection

Removal Procedure

Note: The fluid plug at the front of transmission may not be opened.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle See: Vehicle Lifting > Procedures > Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
2. Place basin underneath the vehicle.
3. Clean away all dirt and debris from the transmission fluid drain plug area.

4. Remove and DISCARD the transmission fluid drain plug (1).
5. Let the transmission fluid run out for 10 minutes.

Installation Procedure

1. Apply thread sealant to the NEW transmission fluid drain plug. Refer to the electronic parts catalog for the proper thread sealant.
2. Re-cut the transmission drain hole thread.
Note: Service may offer plugs that are not microencapsulated. If this is the case apply thread lock agent to the plug. If the fastener is microencapsulated, install a NEW transmission fluid drain plug. DO NOT reuse the old plug.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution See: Vehicle > Vehicle Damage Warnings > Fastener Caution.

3. Install NEW transmission fluid drain plug and tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement See: Battery Tray > Removal and Replacement > Battery Tray Replacement.
6. Clean away all dirt and debris from the transmission fluid plug area.

7. Remove and DISCARD the transmission fluid fill plug (1).
8. Add transmission fluid. For transmission fluid capacity and specifications refer to Manual Transmission Specifications See: Manual Transmission/Transaxle > Mechanical > Manual Transmission Specifications.
9. Install a NEW transmission fluid fill plug and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
10. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement See: Battery Tray > Removal and Replacement > Battery Tray Replacement.
