I have a L-34 with a frame off restoration.

The 396 has been rebuilt, so I doubt I have oil on the clutch plate. I had the flywheel surfaced, new clutch plate pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing. I have real bad clutch chatter when I let out the clutch. I was told that it might be the motor mounts, so I changed the new factory mounts, for polyurethane mounts, It did seem to help but the problem is still there. I have changed all the universal joints as well. The only thing I did not mess with is the twelve bolt rear end, it seems to be alright. I have installed a lot of clutches in my day, but this baffles me.

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

Yes, clutch chatter is everything to do with the clutch disc, pressure plate and flywheel, when you say resurfaced do you mean re-machined? Because hitting it with a gasket gun will make it chatter. Also the quality of the clutch will play into things as well. Is it a new clutch not rebuilt? If new what kind is it?

Please let us know what happens.

Best, Ken

Thanks Ken. I did have the flywheel surface ground, as for the clutch plate I don't know if it
was new or rebuilt. Most of the clutch kits I looked at where either made in Mexico or China
so I suppose that is a lot of my problem.

One thing you might try to cure it is to make it slip on purpose b y playing with the pedal, making it move not fully engaged, sometimes that will take care of it
