My car died, mechanic says timing belt broke, says he will have to replace valves etc, maybe $2,800. Is this estimate for real?

Your engine is an interference where if T belt brakes pistons contact valves. Belt should be replaced every 120K miles or 96 months. Hard to say about estimate job @ 12 hrs. And parts. So if shop rate in your area is $100 hr it could likely reach $2000.
