after installing a new thermostat it leaks anti freeze from the housing and over heats

Either you cracked the housing because the t-stat wasn't sitting properly, or the gasket didn't seal because the surfaces wern't cleaned properly or it loose.

Recheck you work. Keep in mind, there is a small lip where the thermostat fits into. If not properly seated it will leak or crack the thermostat.
