This does sounds like the flexplate and starter need to be replaced. If your mechanic initially repaired the issue by replacing the starter but the problem returned, it's possible that the flywheel was not properly inspected or replaced.
A worn flywheel can cause the starter gear to not engage properly, leading to grinding noises. Shimming the starter is sometimes done to ensure proper alignment, but it might not be a permanent solution if the flywheel is damaged.
