All of a sudden, trany started whining like a power steering pump out of fluid. I pulled over into the nearest parking lot to investigate. Fluid levels are fine and no visible damage. I tried cycling through the gears and noticed that there is no reverse at all and the whining persists in all gears. Any ideas?

This sounds like too separate problems first the whining noise is coming from the clogged transmission filter which you can change by following this guide.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-service-an-automatic-transmission

Next can you see if the reverse light work? IF not it means the transmission range sensor has gone out so the transmission does not know you are in reverse here is the sensor location so you can get it replaced.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers
