1979 Suburban 454 engine

Replaced harmonic balancer, number 1 cylinder at tdc timing mark at 0 distributor rotor at number 1 plug wire engine turns over but does not start immediatley. Idles roughly and exhaust pipe gets red hot with in a minute or two. What could possibly be the problem?

Hey usergy
Usually thats an indicator of a timing/excess fuel issue. Do you have a timing light to get set to spec?
I'm assuming its carburated, is there fuel dumping down the bore?
