Read old post about TDC #1 and rotor pointing to #8?

97 chevy 350 again. There was an old post by porshman who was peplacing intake gaskets(same thing I did) and couldn't get truck to start. He got a reply saying that the engine needed to be TDC #1 with marks lined up at balancer and that the rotor needed to be pointing to #8 stamped on the distributor. And neede to be + or - 7 degrees. Can anyone explain if this is right because poorshman never asked another queston. I am having he__ trying to get this truck of mine running. Have pulled the dist. At least 10 times. Thanks.

The info there was convelouted , the #8 that was stated is a mark in the distributor indicating v8 or 6 for v6, the rotor should point at it when tdc #1 compression stroke is achieved hope this take the guess work out some , note the #6 on the picic

Oh and the tapping noise, did you for any reason remove rockers or lifters and pushrods
