I need to replce the a/c compressor on my vehicle. For the novice how hard is it to complete this project. Also, how do I go about taking on this project

You may have to take it somewhere to have the AC system drained, evacutated, and recharged.

You might be able to ask them is they will discharge your system then refill it after you replace the compressor but I doubt they will do that. If you know them well, ask them. But yes, please let someone discharge it correctly.
