Would it be cheaper to replace the whole differential or just the bearings in the differential? When I reach 55 mph I can hear a definite noise. I just had the axle bearings replaced and they told me at the repair shop that if the noise didn't go away it was the differential and it costs about $1000 to replace those bearings most of the cost being for labor. Is this true?

What is the noise your hearing?
There are many things that can cause noise on a vehicle without it being the differential. If it's a noise that you only hear when you get to a certain speed it is likely not the rear end. Usually those make a very distinctive noise that gets louder and higher pitched as you speed up.
