Air Conditioning problem
2003 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Automatic 32,000 miles

I just got the car and the a/c only works on the highest fan setting. When I put it on the high fan setting, the a/c turns on but has a really loud noise, sounds like a motor overworking or something. Also, it starts out with pretty cold air for about 3 seconds and then becomes only coolish air. I was wondering if someone could help me figure out what needs to be replaced/repaired. Thanks!

Start by popping the hood and seing if it is the A/C compressor making the noise when A/C is on. Do you hear the noise when using the heater? If so it may be the blower motor that has a bad bearing.

No, it's only the a/c that has a problem

Probably the compressor then. See if the front of the compressor is turning or still when it makes the noise. If it is making noise only when the front of comp is spinning, you may have to take it to a shop to have gauges installed to see if the pressures are good, could possibly be overfilled.
