: Can anyone tell me if the service engine light has to be on to hook it up to one of those code machines to find out what is wrong?

I found out the answer to my own question. I was told that if the service engine light is not on the computer doesn't register that anything is wrong. But I found out that in my car if you turn the key on off on off and then on again look at the service engine light and it will blink the code for you. Hope this can help someone else.
