Hello,

The check engine light comes on when the on-board diagnostic system of your vehicle detects an error/issue with one or more of the sensors or parts for the engine or transmission management system.

It can range anything from a faulty spark plugs to a emission related issues.
Best course of action when the check engine light gets illuminated is to scan the vehicle for trouble codes.
Typically, you can take you vehicle (if it is drivable) to your local auto parts store and they can scan and provide you with the codes. The codes can help with the diagnostics of why the light is illuminated.
