This car has ben in the family since 1993. Has always used coolant, and so assume thier is a leak in the coolant system, but have never been able to locate--so just keep adding coolant (also have changed water pump, thermostat, etc. To no avail). Recently it has began to have problems with idle--wanting to stop when coming to a stop, e.G, a traffic light. Thoought it might be the disengagement clutch, but good transmission friend said the transmission is fine and that it is a engine performance issue. Have changed wires, plugs, etc, keep increasing idle, but still having same problem. Any ideas? We really like our little car and hope something can be done to fix it. Thank you for your response.

There are several reasons for this problem.
1. Leaking Head Gasket
2. Leaking Intake Gaskets
3. Leak from Hoses
4. Leaking Heater Core
5. Throttle position Sensor
6. Crankshaft or camshaft sensors

The obvious first thing that I would recommend is a tune up if it has not been done lately.
Secondly, The TPS, crankshaft, and cam position sensors are relatively inexpensive and with a little patience and a repair manual these could be done if you are mechanically inclined.

The last is the most expensive intake and head gaskets these should be done by a professional unless you are really mechanically inclinlined or have a friend that is.

The heatercore would address the disappearing antifreeze, but not the other problems. If you smell sweet it leaks.

The idle wanting to stop issue is your idle air control valve. Have it checked/replaced
