1989 Chevy Celebrity Engine running warm

Hi:

My 89 celebrity seem to run warm, particually on the interstate or climing large grades. It gets very close to the edge of the red line, then goes back down.

I notice the fan doesn't come on until it gets very close to this red line. Then it shuts off before it gets below 220.

It has yet to "overheat" the temp light has never come on, but I'm wondering what can I do to remedy this problem.

Cheap fix replace the thermostat and report back and will get into more complicated stuffs

Hi:

Thanks for the timley responce. I replaced the t-stat today, still had the same issues. It seems like the cooling fan is coming on at the wrong time.

I'm wondering what is the best method to test actual temprature of the coolant to see if the guage is accurate?

Test the coolant temperature sensor and if it has a engine temperature gauge switch test that too-
