1994 Chevy Caprice V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I drive the car and the temp. Gage wont heat up unless idoled then once you get going it cools right down, what is this about? Thanks.

Sounds like a open thermostat. Try replacing it and see what happens

I thought it might have been that, but I always thought it would over heat with the thermostat, but I take it that would be a brocken closed thermo?

I changed the thermostat and flushed it adding new coolant. I let the car idol with the coolant cap off for about 45mn. It was finally hot and the temp gage was in the hot zone. I took it for a ride and the gage started going cold and the air started blowing cold?
