I bought a used Avalanche and I initially could not see how many miles were on it because the dashboard was not working. The car salesman said it can be easily fixed and ordered a new part. Consequently, when he ordered a new part, the mileage came in at more than 270k miles and he tells me that he ordered a used part and didn't know how many miles were on the dashboard. Is he telling the truth? Can the mileage of a vehicle become altered when the dashboard changes?

It is not legal to sell a car with an altered odometer, or one that is not working.

Have a carfax run on the VIN to get a mileage estimate, but you have a good case to return the truck and get your money back.

If it does indeed have 270K on it, it will most likely become a money pit.
