My service engine soon light came on I took the car to Midas for a check up, after a computer diagnostic test a CODE:P1870 TRANSMISSION COMPONENT SLIPPING was found. I went to a transmission repair shop and was told that I will need overhaul soon, I took the car in for a overhaul and I was charge $ 1800.00, after 7000KM the car start having the same problem it started slipping at first then it will not go into gear just as before. I took it back and I was told that the transmission fluid ad leak out, the leak was fix I got a fluid refill and I was send on my way.
I purchase this ASTRO VAN new in 1997 I always kept my 3000KM check ups, I changed 2 Batteries, Water pump, Alternator, Brake pads, Drive Belt, things that fall apart soon.
My question, is it logical that a car whit 0nly 102000KM, having no abuse need a transmission overhaul or it was just a simple rip off.

It is entirely possible it needed the trans overhaul.I have seen them with less miles fail. If th ePCM gave that code, then it has sensed that for the speed you were going, the amount of throttle it was given and the engine rpm's that the trans was slipping, have seen this many times before, unfortunatly that is the way alot of those mid to late 90's GM trannies were
