Car engine not starting up?

Hi-
The engine does crank and the dash lights are not on when engine is turned to ON. I believe the headlights do work with the new battery, but not sure. Also not sure what kind of noise it was. Son isn't home right now.

When we hooked the new battery up, the engine tried to start immediately without the key in the ignition. The alarm goes off, but the engine won't turn over and start.

Ask him if he hooked the cables to the new battery wrong. I would be checking all fuses.

Hi cindym44,

Yes, check if all the fuses are ok.

Dash lights not working with ignition switch at ON position can either mean a blown main fuse or a faulty ignition switch.

Test the ignition switch for power supply. If yes and no output, replace the ignition switch.

Honda was still having some fuel relay issues as late as 94 I think. Do you notice whether the cabin temperature is hotter on the days when it doesn't start immediately? Maybe opening the car and letting it cool off inside allows the car to start after a while. If so, it may be fuel relay related.

Hi Gina,

I believe not much guessing is required.

The problem should be a damaged head gasket resulting in the compression dropping. Pull out the engine oil dipstick and see if the oil is milky. If yes, the cylinder head and/or gaskert is bad.

Remove the radiator cap and top up with water. Without closing the cap, crank engine and if water shoots out, the head gasket is blown.

The car will fire but will not continue to run. You can give it gas but it just boggs down and shuts off.

You have spark, that is obvious, so your problem I would venture is the fuel pressure. Have the pressure checked.

The car runs fine but in the last six months after the car has been running and the engine is hot the car wont restart. The engine turns over and tries to start but will not start. If I leave the car out in the hot sun, same story. I took it to the first mechanic and he replaced the distributor. No luck. The second mechanic said it was the fuel pump and replaced it. No luck. Once the car cools down or is in the shade for a couple of hours, it starts fine and runs fine. No one can seem to figure this one out.

Sounds like a main relay.
Main relay is located under the dash on the drivers side below the steering wheel. It powers the fuel pump and sends 12 volts to the positive side of the injectors. If this is at fault you wont have 12 volts at the injectors or the fuel pump will be inoperative. So the pump replacement is more understandable, sort of.

These accords also have had problems with distributor bearings so the distributer may have also been an issue. If the vehicle does not have an injector pulse or spark the distributor is probably the cause. There are three coils inside the distributor(crank, TDC, and coil)and a igniter. All known to fail. These can be tested for an ac voltage when cranking. The spec is between.5 to 1.5 volts. If you have an oscilliscope you can test it with more accurate results. You can also test the igniter with a logic probe by testing for an ac pulse coming out of the ecm and into the igniter. Then test for a pulse coming out of the igniter. If it has a pulse coming in and not one on the output then the igniter is bad.
I know you replaced it, but may have been a good idea anyways.

I have a 94 Honda accord EX, 4 cylinder, 2.2L, 140,000 miles. I have a intermittent problem with no start. When I started my car, sometimes no sound, and some indicator lights on dashboard are on, but speed shift light on dashboard indicated my shift is at D4 position but I realized my shift is really on Park position, when I changed the shift to park position again, my car can start. However, I met a new problem a couple of times. I parked my car well, but when I want to start a couple of days or one week later, I found all lights are on, but Parking light is on and still with D4 light flash, I also heard engine sound but my car can't start. I moved the speed shift for many times and restart again, it didn't work. I asked my friend to help me. He make my car move a little by releasing the brake clutch, he pressed the gas pedal hardly when he start the car, at last my car start. After that, I try to restart my car a couple of times a little later, it works well. However, my friend didn't know what problem was. He guessed maybe some problems in gas pressure but I still have enough gas in gas tank. I hope you can help me. Thank you so much.

I am sorry but I have a hard time understanding what it is you are saying, especially about the shifter. The non-starting I think I can help you with. The gas pressure is not really relational to the amount of gas in the tank. Rather it is controlled by a fuel pressure regulator. The pump kicks the gas or fuel down the line and the pressure regulator controls how much pressure the system has or needs. BUT there is one component that is a particular weak spot in the fuel system. It is the EFI relay which is located in the car up under the dash on the drive side. I would pull it out and either repair the bad solder connections or replace. After that the car should start but I am lost with you information about the shifter.
