The car has a dead battery and a non operating hood release. I need to move the car, is there any way to get the gear shift to neutral?
I need to move the car. I have turned the key and depressed the brake petal as I attempt to press the release button on the shifter.
It will not depress.

There is a small square cover just above the "PRN2L" on the center console. Using a small screw driver pry the cover up and remove. If you press down inside the hole this disengages the shifter lock allowing you to shift out of park. Try this and get back to me.

Thank you! Your answer was very helpful (please note on the prizm the little access port with the button is just left of park). Any suggestions on how to unlatch the hood? The cable does not seem to be broken but will not release the latch. Thank you again.

Get someone to help you. Have one person pulling on the primary hood release lever and the other person pulling up on the hood at the same time. If the hood release cable and latch is working just no pushing the hood up this should work otherwise you'll need to remove some under body panel on the front bumper to get access to the release cable at the hood latch. Hope this helps.
