won't start unless you use starter fluid once started runs great don't smell any fuel when trying to start

First would be to put a fuel pressure gauge on it to see what the pressure is at crank. Then you would need a scan tool to check the cam sensor signal to determine if it is able to synchronize. Usually if the cam sensor sinal is missing, it will start, it will just take an extended amount of time. I suppose if the coolant temp sensor is not reading cold enough, it won't have the proper enrichment, that would be something to check as well.
