I was driving my car tonight 1985 buick regal and the belt have been squealing for about a week but lack of funds has resulted in non repair. I was driving and the belt begun to squeal then my head unit turned off and would not turn back on then my headlights dimmed and my car began to over heat then directly after smoke began to billow from the air vents. I stopped and turned off the engine and tried to start it again after a few minutes and no luck but I waited about an hour and tried to start it and everything started fine. Turned it off tried to turn it on again and no such luck. What could be the cause of this?

Belt could be slipping causing loss of power to the alternator and water pump along with other components. Try changing the belt and post your results. I wouldn't try to start it again, running it hot for a short amount of time at all can cause cracked head gaskets, cracked head, and much more problems.
